A 36-year-old man who flew onto the hood and through the windshield of a vehicle on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Wednesday died at a hospital later that night, officials said Thursday. Anthony Christopher Shafer, a Danville resident, had stopped to help at the scene of another incident on westbound Interstate Highway 80 just east of Treasure Island when a vehicle struck Shafer, sending him airborne into another vehicle, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau. A section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was planned to open earlier than scheduled Monday morning following overnight work closures, California Department of Transportation spokesman Bart Ney said. Some drivers attempting to cross the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge at night this weekend are going to be detoured to surface streets while the bridge gets some seismic retrofitting. Vehicles driving eastbound on Interstate Highway 80 will have to get off at the Fourth Street exit and will be routed to Sterling Street to get back onto the highway and to the bridge. The detour will be Saturday and Sunday from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from Sunday at 11:30 p.m. to Monday at 8 a.m. The Bay Bridge will remain open in both directions while temporary support columns from the West Approach Seismic Safety Retrofit project are demolished.... cont...
